Joseph Lowery's books about the web and web-building tools are international bestsellers, having sold more than 400,000 copies worldwide in nine different languages. His most recent book is the Adobe CS3 Web Workflows and is currently working on the Dreamweaver CS4 Bible. Joseph is the author of the recently published CSS Hacks and Filters as well as the Dreamweaver Bible and Fireworks Bible series from Wiley Publishing. "Mostly I write to you whenever something strikes me, without waiting for a specific invitation: this invitation really comes far too soon, I would think most people need a few weeks to use a major tutorial like Dreamweaver, and to digest things, before giving feedback: but I can say this now 1. You seem to have standardised on giving the first five chapters as a sample: this really isn't much good, because we don't get any further than the user interface, it gave a much clearer impression of the title and the presenter's style as you had it before when you gave samples from different places in the tutorial 2. A 'tutorial' that simply goes through the menu items in order is just a talking version of the manual, gives me nothing I can't find out for myself, and is not what I would call a tutorial: someone making selections and then undoing them while saying 'we don't want to do that' is really pointless and irritating: the ones that seem to me worth paying money for are ones that take a fairly simple task and show you how to actually get started doing something real, and most of all to give an idea of a sensible *workflow* 3. is there any way you could include a 'find' function? I needed to find out how the 'wrap' function works in Numbers (because sometimes you have it in a contextual menu and sometimes not) and the tutorial didn't help, I had to do an internet search. 4. I realise you have to try to provide something that will cater for a load of different styles and tastes: but if you want to keep the Europe it's important that you continue with tutors who aren't too brash, using references to specifically American concepts: constant emphasis on doing things 'faster' is a real drag, a quality experience needs time, and any major program like Dreamweaver or Flash or Final Cut is always going to be a major part of the life of the person using it, what's important is that it feels friendly, that things work, that you feel empowered. At the same time the user needs a bit of charisma and spark: Joseph Lowery has a nice laid-back style free of the kind of hype that permeates most of the free alternatives on YouTube, and when we get into the nitty gritty of something like CSS, he does indeed get going with a bit of enthusiasm: but the first dozen chapters or so were really pretty yawn-making, not because of the content but because it sounded that *he* thought is was boring! We live in a world where we're used to David Pogue's level of involvement ;-) 5. One quite important general comment is that - for my taste and learning style - the chapters are too short, and we have to wait too long at the beginning of each before we get into anything 'meaty'; I mean, a new chapter every 3-5 minutes, and then half-a-minute of introduction to *every* chapter really gets irritating ... But I have about 30 of your tutorials, using them is something I look forward to, and of course have learnt a lot in a good way. By the way, I know you have to make a living, but the reality at my end is that I'm living on a very low income after a heart attack, so it's only when you offer a very special bundle price that I can afford things - so many thanks for that! I've been using Dreamweaver every day for 10 years, but it was your 5th birthday rebate that made it possible for me to catch up with CSS and the changes in CS4!
